Bets Van Boxel Dolls
About Bets Van Boxel "De Poppenstee" Dolls
Bets And Jos Van Boxel started In 1986 "De Poppenstee". They rebuilt a former farmhouse with their own hands into a gallery and studio.
The name is a combination of "poppen"; the Dutch word for dolls and "stee"; the type of farmhouse in this part of the Netherlands. Daughter Amy reinforced the team 10 years later after finishing her study as an Industrial Designer.

Bets began making dolls as a hobby and developed her own techniques. She called her creations "Character dolls". She wrote several books about the subject and provided courses on a daily basis in making dolls from self-hardening modelling paste, iron wire, tissue paper and tape.

Because of the travelling by Bets and getting acquainted with porcelain, Bets switched to making limited edition porcelain ethnic dolls. She also wrote a book about this subject and made an instruction film. She called her dolls "Children of the world". After a while there was more and more interest from abroad and Amy joined the business to help out. The dolls are exhibited in the USA, France, Monaco, Germany and Belgium. The dolls end up with collectors all over the world.

Twice a year Bets and Amy present their new collections of dolls. They are made especially inspired by the trips that Jos and Bets still make every year. Next to all beautiful pictures of landscapes and ancient buildings, the album of Bets is filled with beautiful children's faces. At local markets they search for authentic fabrics, ornaments and accessories.

The idea for a doll sometimes starts with a beautifully woven fabric, an expressive face or just a pose. Bets and Amy will go through their "collection" to complete the picture in their head.

Most children are completely or partly dressed in traditional clothing. All dolls clothing will be, if possible, made from authentic worn clothing. Clothing and Shoes have to look worn, so are often "dirtied" to echo the original clothing worn. Real human hair or mohair is used as a wig or fixed directly on the skull.

A doll is approved when it tells a story to the viewer. That facial expression, pose and clothing are all right and the child becomes "real".
Bets and Amy are looking in particular for the beauty within a person. Every creation reflects the love that is put in while making it. The biggest complement consists of the collector that appreciates the work of art, and wants to give it a beautiful place in their home.

Each Bets doll is an extremely low limit of either just 5 or 10 pieces worldwide, this makes them highly desirable and collectable.

We are delighted to be able to bring you a selection of previously owned, rare, and highly desirable porcelain original "children" from one of the worlds most dedicated, talented and respected doll artists at approximately one third of the original cost. Please enjoy these wonderful works of art.

Jennifer.
